Balancing Creativity and Practicality
Growing up in Hamilton, OH, Meghan always found satisfaction in looking for patterns and answers. Her fascination with numbers led her to seek a business degree at Miami University in Oxford — but she soon found out that wasn’t the right path for her.
“I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life,” she says. “Luckily, Miami had a program that allowed me to express myself.”
Meghan changed her major to Mass Communication and Media Studies and was soon immersed in business media, marketing and advertising, and sports production.
“My mom always told me to be a creative soul, but my dad was the practical type who insisted I need to be able to find a job,” says Meghan.
The switch to media had glamorous payoffs. She participated in Inside Hollywood, a popular workshop in Los Angeles that gives Miami students a peek behind the Hollywood curtain. The three-week “study abroad” took her inside the film and television production, including Fox, the Warner Bros. lot, and shadowing at Lussier Creative Entertainment Marketing Agency and with the stage manager at TBS’ Conan. Along with editing, script development, casting, entertainment law, administration and finance, development and distribution, the program provided a valuable marketing education.
Solving Problems with Data
Although the bright lights of Tinseltown called to her, Meghan stayed in the Greater Cincinnati area for two very important reasons: love and work.
“I met my boyfriend and a friend got me a job at General Electric,” she says with a laugh. Her role as a Logistics Analyst at GE Aviation was assisting in the collection and interpretation of data and developing and analyzing forecasts of aviation engine components. But the job was missing the creativity she craved.
“The most inventive I got to be was in creating dashboards,” she says. And she wanted to work with a larger team where she could collaborate and bring exciting projects to life.
Fortunately, that all changed when she saw that TDF was hiring.
“With Meghan we’re expanding our marketing technology capabilities,” says Karen Meyers Holzer, President of The Deciding Factor. “We hired Meghan for her skills in marketing, business administration, data analysis and strategic communication to dig deep into our clients, use data to get insights into their customers’ journey, and to build and maintain their brand awareness.”
Just Keep Swimming
How does Meghan relax when she’s not diving into actionable insights? She doesn’t, actually!
“It’s hectic when you’ve got three kids and are working on a master’s degree,” she says. Meghan and her boyfriend take care of his three children on weekends while she tries to balance online classes in science in information technology. Somehow, they make it all work — and still find time to hit up Reds games and breweries, watch Outlander on Netflix and even experiment with cooking Indian dishes at home.
“The kids and I like to say just keep swimming,” she says, quoting Dory from the Pixar movie Finding Nemo. “Even if today is hard, tomorrow can always be better.”
