Senior Marketing Account Manager Mary Young is Looking for the Perfect Beat
Music has been always important to Mary Young. Her dad plays French horn for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, her mom plays piccolo and flute, and Mary and her siblings were always singing when they were kids.
“We were like the von Trapps, just without the whole fleeing for our lives,” she says with a laugh.
Her love of music led her to a degree in Electronic Media at the University of Cincinnati’s Conservatory of Music. Little did she know her career would go a very different direction — to TDF as our new Senior Marketing Account Manager!
The Gift of Gab
“People told me I had the gift of gab,” she explains. “I’ve always been really good with people, so it came naturally for me to coordinate interviews and deal with clients.”
That ease with people led her into a new field of study: Marketing and sales. She continued her education at UC’s Carl H. Lindner College of Business, earning a Master of Science in Marketing. While working as a Graduate Assistant she organized events and contracts, developed social media content and advised on-campus organizations.
Scratching Professional Itches
This unique combination of skills would prove valuable over the next decade. Mary jumped headlong into working at WLWT-Channel, Cincinnati’s local NBC affiliate as an Account Executive. Her responsibilities included prospecting clients, assisting in content development based on customer needs, selling advertising and much more.
“My favorite part of the job was working with local businesses,” she says. “I loved forming meaningful relationships with my clients and helping them to thrive.”
But everything changed in 2022 when she and husband Eric had their son, Henry. Mary knew the fast pace, long hours and commission-based pay at WLWT weren’t how she envisioned her life.
So she quit her job and tried being a stay-at-home mom — for about a month!
“I’ve got these professionals itches I need to scratch,” she says. “My mom is a lawyer and it was drilled into me growing up that I needed to have a job.”
She discovered TDF was looking for an experienced client manager, and the rest is history. Now this marketing and advertising professional acts as a liaison between the digital marketing team and the client, nurturing trust and ensuring customer satisfaction while guiding projects across their entire lifecycle.
“We’re so happy to have Mary onboard with us,” says Karen Meyers Holzer, President and owner of The Deciding Factor. “She’s already excelling in her critical duties planning and executing project scope and budgets, conceiving and overseeing campaigns, and guiding collaboration between TDF and our clients. We’re looking forward to benefiting from her assertiveness, impressive communication skills and expertise in B2B professional services.”
Find Whatever Keeps You Going
Dynamic interpersonal skills do need recharging on occasion. Mary stays centered by exercising her body and mind. She recently ran the Flying Pigs Marathon and loves to swim and dance. She and Eric are big foodies and often check out local breweries. And, of course, Henry keeps her on her toes.
“What I really want to pass down to him is the idea of trying to find whatever keeps you going,” she says. “Like the song says, I’m always looking for the perfect beat, something to give my day meaning.”
